Khan for the Communities

A long term program for strengthening residents' identities by a heritage and social visitors' center which will reflect the range of communities residing in the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood of Lod.

The center will provide residents with a place of employment and a meeting place where the young generation can connect to their parents' heritage (Ethiopian and Arab). It will also be a meeting place where tourists can meet with Lod residents and the story of their society as a microcosm of Israeli society.

Location: The center of the Old City in Lod. The Khan for the Communities will overlook the peace triangle and the Hilu Khan. This site was chosen in order to promote the need and social agenda of creating a meeting place where intercultural dialogue and encounter will take place.

Inside the Khan for the Communities:

  • Godjo - traditional Ethiopian mud structure for the Ethiopian community.

  • End kitchen - authentic, Arab meeting place with local dishes.

  • Community garden with authentic spices.

  • Cultivating the environment of Tumarkin's Friendship sculpture.

  • And the vision for the future: conference and lecture rooms.

This is a physical and social project with construction components alongside creating activities and places of employment for strengthening the residents of the neighborhood.
